3 Ways Sitting at the Computer is Impacting Your Health

With so many of us sitting at the computer for large portions of our day it is so important that we do it correctly. Over time sitting incorrectly has a cumulative effect on our bodies and there are 3 things that you need to be mindful of because incorrectly sitting at the computer will cause pain & dysfunction eventually if you don't do anything about it.


Here are Your 3 Things to Consider at the Computer!!


1. Eyes to Screen Level- when seated at the computer your neck needs to be in neutral. It should not be looking down or up at the computer screen as it should be at eye level. Over time if you are not in neutral a muscular imbalance will ensue. Muscle imbalances set the stage for things like; tendinitis, frozen shoulder, radiating pain, nerve issues and so on.


2. Chest Breathing- this happens naturally when we sit because we are in a position that is harder to bring the breath deeper into the body. Shallow breathing over uses muscles in the neck and further contributes to pain and dysfunction both in this area and in the core and pelvic floor (more on that in another post).


3. Rounded Shoulders- this happens as a result of faulty posture and not taking the time to set up correctly. Faulty posture can contribute to tension headaches, neck and back pain, nerve pain in the shoulders and arms and improper breathing habits.

As soon as you position your head and shoulders to round forwards as shown below you change the pressure on your spinal column and over time this will have long lasting effects on your health and wellness.
